In order to qualify for this list, companies must sell car insurance in at least 5 states and have at least 25 car insurance customer reviews accepted on Clearsurance.com. The ranking is based on the percentage of reviewers who said they would recommend the company to family or friends. Percentages are rounded to the nearest whole percentage. When writing a review, customers are asked to rate how likely they are to recommend car insurance companies on a scale from “Not at all Likely” (0) to “Extremely Likely” (10). Reviews that rated the company 7-10 on the scale were counted as likely to recommend towards the recommendation percentages outlined in this blog.

1. MMG Insurance Company (Maine Mutual Group)

The number one most recommended car insurance company by the Clearsurance community is MMG Insurance Group. The history of MMG goes back to 1897 when a group of citizens who worked in farming and logging in rural Maine became increasingly concerned about the high cost of insurance. They banded together to start the Aroostook County Patrons Mutual Fire Insurance Company. At that time in history, fires were the number one threat to property and insuring against losses due to fire was very expensive — if it was even available.

In 1906, the company moved its headquarters and became known as the Maine Mutual Group, and it now offers a range of personal and commercial insurance products across much of northern New England.
